The three major sessions
Forex never sleeps — but it does breathe. Liquidity shifts between three regional hubs as the trading day rotates around the globe:
- Asia (00:00–09:00 UTC) — Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore. Yen and AUD pairs see the most action.
- London (08:00–17:00 UTC) — the largest hub by volume. EUR and GBP pairs dominate.
- New York (13:00–22:00 UTC) — US data drives the biggest moves. USD pairs and gold lead.
London and New York shift an hour earlier in UTC while on summer time. Asia does not — Japan has no daylight saving.
The London–NY overlap
From 13:00 to 17:00 UTC — an hour earlier in summer — both London and New York are open. This is the most liquid window of the day: tighter spreads, faster execution, and the cleanest price action. For US-session day traders this is the only window worth being at the screen.

What time does the forex market open?
The forex market opens on Sunday at 17:00 New York time — 21:00 UTC (US summer time) / 22:00 UTC (winter) — and runs continuously until the same hour on Friday (New York close). It is closed on weekends except for short Sunday liquidity gaps.
What is the best forex session to trade?
The London–New York overlap has the highest volume and tightest spreads, making it the best window for trend trades: 13:00–17:00 UTC in winter, 12:00–16:00 UTC while both centres are on summer time. The London open (08:00 UTC, 07:00 in summer) is best for breakout and stop-hunt setups.
Why do session times shift?
Daylight saving moves London and New York an hour earlier in UTC from spring to autumn, and the two do not change their clocks on the same dates, so the overlap runs an hour longer or shorter for a few weeks each spring and autumn. Japan does not observe daylight saving at all, so the Asia session stays at 00:00–09:00 UTC all year. The clock above adjusts automatically.
Does forex trade on weekends?
No. Spot forex closes on Friday and reopens on Sunday, both at 17:00 New York time — 21:00 UTC (US summer time) / 22:00 UTC (winter). The weekly gap between Friday close and Sunday open is the only true non-trading window. Crypto and some CFDs trade through weekends but are not spot FX.
